Two hundred and eighty-one students competed for the National Spelling Bee trophy and the $30,000 cash prize. Millions of students participated in some type of spelling bee during the year, but only one came out as the final winner – Arvind Mahankali. This year’s spelling bee was held at Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor, MD. Orientation was held on Sunday May 27th and the kids took their first computer-based test on Tuesday and live spelling began on Wednesday. It was a week filled with excitement, camaraderie, pain and loss.

As Congress considers comprehensive immigration reform, a local immigrant rights group is asking Illinois Representatives to introduce a bill in late March. The group says mass deportations are costing the U.S. too much — in dollars and labor. But any new legislation may come too late for the husband of one Chicago resident.
A surgeon works with CeaseFire to prevent gun violence

With the number of murders in Chicago at 59 this year alone, one surgeon is partnering with CeaseFire to take a different approach at reducing gun violence. The Northwestern Memorial Hospital doctor recalls a memory prior to the partnership of a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the chest and was ok, and then two weeks later shot in the spine by the same people and is now paralyzed from the neck down. She says if CeaseFire had been involved, the boy's life might have been saved.
After-school program changing West Side neighborhood one child at a time

Doug Low left his job owning a large consulting firm to running an after-school program in the rough West Side of Chicago called Kidz Express. The program is a safe haven for neighborhood kids to play activites with other kids, get help with school work and open up about issues going on in their lives. Instead of young kids sitting at home alone or possibly joining a gang, Lowe says the program is changing the neighborhood one child at a time.
